Margaret "Maggie" Chen, 87, of Portland, Oregon, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on March 14, 1938, in San Francisco to James and Helen Liu, Margaret grew up with a deep love of learning and nature that would define her life's work. She earned her teaching degree from UC Berkeley in 1960 and went on to inspire generations of students at Lincoln Elementary School, where she taught third grade for 34 years.
Margaret married the love of her life, David Chen, in 1962. Together they built a beautiful home filled with laughter, music, and the aroma of her famous dumplings. She was an avid gardener whose rose garden became a neighborhood landmark, and she never missed a chance to share cuttings with anyone who admired her blooms.
She is survived by her children, Michael Chen (Sarah) and Lisa Chen-Park (James); four grandchildren, Emily, Daniel, Sophie, and Oliver; and her sister, Patricia Liu-Williams. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband David in 2019.
A celebration of life will be held on April 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
